At the end of 2016, WM DOLL, the largest adult doll manufacturer in mainland China, introduced a groundbreaking innovation: an adult doll integrated with artificial intelligence (AI). This AI sex doll not only boasts a lifelike appearance but also has the ability to engage in simple conversations with its "owner." The doll's eyes and mouth can make corresponding movements, and its head, hands, and feet can move freely like a robot. Additionally, customers can create personalized dolls by selecting various features, including height, hairstyle, and eye color.
China’s Push Towards AI Integration
The Beijing government is aggressively pursuing its goal of turning China into a global AI powerhouse by integrating AI technology into various aspects of life. Some Chinese entrepreneurs are now applying this expertise to a new domain: adult dolls. Jin San Doll, one of the largest adult doll manufacturers in mainland China, headquartered in southeastern Guangdong Province, is leading the way as the first company to produce AI robot sex dolls.
Current Capabilities and Challenges of AI Sex Dolls
While the AI functionality in Jin San Dolls is a remarkable innovation, it is still in its early stages. The dolls can answer simple questions and make basic facial expressions using their eyes and mouth, but they are not yet capable of engaging in extended conversations. When a command is given, the doll responds with appropriate expressions and actions. Additionally, the dolls utilize Baidu's database to search for information, allowing them to provide updates on news, messages, or weather.
However, the development of more advanced AI capabilities has been slow. According to Product Manager Liu Ding, the company’s experts are hesitant to invest heavily in advancing the AI technology of adult dolls. He explained, "We don't expect our AI dolls to be like humans. After all, we are in the business of making adult dolls. But we do plan to introduce more advanced features, such as enabling the limbs to move more naturally."
Growing International Demand
Jin San Doll has already sold over 20 AI-enhanced dolls, priced between 10,000 and 50,000 yuan (approximately $1,449 to $7,246). The company’s annual sales of all WM sex dolls amount to about 20,000 units. They are eager to accelerate the growth of their AI doll exports, with the United States being their largest overseas market. In fact, 80% of their total exports are shipped to the U.S., with half of their overseas shipments destined for this market.
